Paula Timmins, district governor presented a challenge to the Rotary clubs in the district to raise $5.00 per member to be a part of her International Health Project to help purchase lentils for starving families in Nicaragua.

Bemidji Noon Rotary had a successful Walk to Williston Project, held during the month of January, 2006. Our goal was to raise $625.00 for our 120 members and to walk the necessary miles to get three representatives to Williston and back to Bemidji, a round trip of 900 miles. To help raise the money, we sold pedometers to our members so they could keep track of the miles they walked. The pedometers were donated by Rotarian Warren Larson from our local Meritcare Clinic and we sold them for $10.00 each.

Initially we had three representatives attending the district conference, so our walking goal was to walk at least 2,700 miles. We kept track of the miles walked by our members week by week during the month of January. We marked the progress on a large map, made by Rotarian Gary Johnson, that was displayed at our meetings. Rotarian Scott Turn brought in his treadmill to our meeting room. At each of the January meetings five members were selected to walk for three minutes on the treadmill. However, they could pay $5.00 to select someone else to fill their walking time. The additional money was added to our bottom line and the miles walked on the treadmill were included with our total.

We raised $670.00 for the Walk to Williston Project and our members walked 2,864 miles.
